Serving

Why Serve?

Why should I serve in the church? Simply put, the answer is: to become a Biblical Christian. Jesus Christ came to serve. “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45). Serving is one of the fundamental ways to define the ministry of Jesus.

In fact, the word ministry literally means to serve. The Greek noun diakonia is most often translated as either ministry or service. It follows that if serving others is the very definition of ministry, and specifically the ministry of Jesus, then we who take the name Christian should participate in the life of service that Jesus held.

Where do I start?

Our Hills Series is the primary vehicle we have here at Hills to help people in the process of serving. In the segment of the series titled “Serving,” we discuss how God has uniquely made us for His purposes, which includes using the abilities and spiritual gifts He has given to us. Discovering what spiritual gifts are, and which ones we may have been given, proves to be very helpful in finding out how we can serve God and His people. You don’t necessarily have to take the Hills Series in order to serve somewhere, but it is usually the most helpful way to get started.

Team Hills

Team Hills is our once a month gathering for everyone who serves in any capacity at Hills Church. It’s an important commitment that accompanies serving, and we ask that those who serve seek to make it a regular part of their devotion to Jesus at the local church. At Team Hills we receive Bible teaching that’s relevant for what’s next and needed in the church. We also receive training for areas we serve in, as well as worship together, share in the Lord's Supper, and receive prayer. Dinner is provided for adults and for the kids, and there is always free childcare available for nursery through 5th grade. Team Hills is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is usually the first Sunday of the month. If you serve, you'll be invited to our Team Hills facebook page where you'll receive regular updates about events. Also, if you’d like to share the Lord’s supper as a follower of Jesus (even if you’re not yet serving in the local church) you are very welcome to join us for our gathering and sharing the Lords Supper with us.
